Males-They have a brighter grass green face with a cobalt blue streak behind the eye, on the flight feathers, back and rump.   Their coloration in the rest of their body is more of an olive green.   The subspecies lucida, having a more grayish green tone and their eye streaks will almost completely encircle the head.  The legs and beak are a flesh color.

Hens- Hens will look very similar to the males, only without the cobalt rump and wing feathers.  The hen of the lucida species can have a bluish (tealish)  rump and eye streaks; where as the normal hens have a green rump.

Native Habitat- Ecuador to Peru, with the Lucidas found in Columbia

Behavior and Characteristics-    If you are interested in the Big Parrots, but are short on space and money, then the Parrotlet is for you!   They have all the personality and charm of the big birds, but are affordable and are able to be housed within apartments    The parrotlets are one of the few birds that can not scream. They do have the capability of talking, but I usually considered it a wonderful bonus.   To avoid disappointment choose the parrotlet because you want to adopt a parrotlet to your family, not because you want a talking bird.  If that is the case, then to avoid disappointment,  you need to buy a bird that already talks. Parrotlets  can be quite demanding and full of attitude.  They have been described as the Terriers of the Bird World!!  Full of Personality, and ok, they can chase a 4ft macaw off a perch!!  That is what adds to their charm!   They do best being kept by themselves to remain a tame pet. Otherwise they may bond with their birdie friend.  They do not share well with others, as a rule, but there are always exceptions.   They are sexually dimorphic which means that they can be sexed when the babies feather out.
